Spring 2014 Class Schedule


1. Line Dancing with Warren and Joan Harvey—Wednesdays, April 2-May 21, 6pm-8:00pm, Fort Kent  Senior Center.  Put on your dancing shoes and learn some popular dances such as Continental,  Electric Slide, The Cha-Cha, Mambo, and the Cab Driver.  $10 Members/$15 Non-Members.

2. Tour of Northwood’s Nectars with Holly & Steve Hardwick—Tuesday, April 15, 1pm-3pm, Sly Brook Rd (Carpool from UMFK Sports Center parking lot at 12:30pm).  Visit this new sugar house and see how maple sap is collected and processed into maple syrup and other delightful treats.  $5 Members/$7.50 Non-members.

3. Mary Queen of Scots with Erica Nadelhaft—Thursdays, April 17, 24, & May 1, 9am-11am, UMFK Grindle Conference Room.  A historical look at Mary Queen of Scots, a life of intrigue, murder, royalty, and politics.  $10 Members/$15 Non-Members.

4. Tales from the Allagash with Shirlee Conners Carlson—Tuesday, May 6, 1pm-3pm,  CrossWinds.  Participate in an exciting discussion on the customs, culture, and survival of the settlers of the Allagash while learning about folklore and the life of pioneering women in the early days of  lumbering.  $5 Members/$7.50 Non-Members.  Free to CrossWinds residents.

5. Colon Health with Dr. David Coffman—Wednesday, May 14, 9:30am-10:30am, NMMC Board Room.  Dr. Coffman will discuss habits for maintaining a healthy colon and an exploration of the colonoscopy process.  $5 Members/$7.50 Non-Members.

6. The Battle of Monocacy Junction  July 9, 1864 with Dave Hobbins—Thursday, May 15, 1pm-3pm, UMFK Old Model School Room 101.  Come learn about The Battle of Monocacy Junction, “the battle that saved Washington D.C.”  $5 Members/$7.50 Non-Members.

7. Understanding Hospice with Gail Phair-Kirk—Thursday, May 22, 1pm-3pm, UMFK Grindle Conference Room.  Hospice is a special healthcare option for patients and families who are faced with a terminal illness.  This session will discuss the various hospice options that are available and clarify some of the myths about hospice.  $5 Members/$7.50 Non-Members.

8. This class has been CANCELLED Introduction to Sign Language with Judy Daigle—Tuesday, May 27, 1pm-3pm, UMFK Old Model School Room 101.  Come and learn some basics of sign language using hand shapes and  facial expressions.  $5 Members/$7.50 Non-Members.

9. The Life of Senator Margaret Chase Smith with Burnette Bowker & Venette King—Tuesday, June 3, 1pm-3pm, UMFK Old Model School Room 101.  Learn how Margaret Chase Smith triumphed as a women in what was then a “man’s world” of Washington politics.  She did not just witness history, she was history.  $5 Members/$7.50 Non-Members.

10. Eagle Lake Kayak Outing with Ron Guy—Wednesdays, June 11 & 18, 10am-1pm, Eagle Lake Public Beach.  The first outing will be an introductory excursion on scenic Eagle Lake.  The  second outing will be a trip on the Fish River from St. Froid Lake to Eagle Lake.  Participants will meet at the Eagle Lake Public Beach for both dates.  Bring a light lunch, non-alcoholic beverages, and a life-vest if you have one.  Kayaks will be provided.  Participants will be required to sign a liability waiver.  $10 Members/$15 Non-Members.

11. Tour of Valley Crafters with Anna Raymond—Thursday, June 12, 10am-noon, 28 Market Street, Fort Kent.  Visit the Valley Crafter’s workshop on Market Street and see artisans weaving,  spinning wool, knitting and painting.  $5 Members/$7.50 Non-Members.

12. Tour of the Acadian Village with Ann Roy—Wednesday, June 25, 9:30am-12:30pm, Van  Buren (Carpool from UMFK Sports Center parking lot at 8:30am).  Take part in a guided tour of the Acadian Village in Lille.  See demonstrations of weaving, growing and preserving herbs, and the  operation of a buckwheat mill.  Bring a bag lunch.  $5 Members/$7.50 Non-Members.  An additional $6 admission fee will be collected at the village.

13. Fun with Foods with Lillian Carter—Thursday, July 10, 2pm-4pm, Madawaska Senior Center (Carpool from UMFK Sports Center parking lot at 1:15pm).  Learn easy preparation of snacks and main dishes that will incorporate healthy, colorful foods into your daily meals.  $5 Members/$7.50 Non-Members.  The cost of food is an additional $7.50.
