Long post

Elder Abuse is of growing concern throughout the US today, especially here in Maine since we’re one of the oldest states in the country.  Statistics show that tens of thousands of older adults in Maine are abused each year, so it’s important that communities understand the issue and the resources available.  As the Elder Abuse Prevention Advocate at Legal Services for the Elderly, I’m currently seeking opportunities to provide presentations to community groups and civic organizations throughout the state.  I have developed a 45-minute presentation that has worked well at other Senior Colleges in Maine, providing an opportunity for a 1-hour discussion about this important topic.  The PowerPoint presentation includes the definition of Elder Abuse, brief videos that show what abuse might look like, the Red Flags to identify abuse, how communities can be part of the solution, and the resources available in Maine to provide services and assistance.  I’ve found these sessions to be a great opportunity for attendees to share their own concerns and experiences with the difficult issue of Elder Abuse.

Is this something that might interest the St. John Valley Senior College?  I realize you’re already into your spring semester and that you’d most likely be looking at scheduling something in the fall.  Please be aware that my position is only funded through the end of September, so we’d need to schedule something before September 30th.  If you’d like to learn more about Elder Abuse, visit the website of the Maine Council for Elder Abuse Prevention at www.elderabuseprevention.info.  If you’d like to learn more about Legal Services for the Elderly, visit our website at www.mainelse.org
